Let us enter a short season of profitable discoveries from the written word in various ages. Course Description in the CatalogThis course will focus on the more complex structures of language with respect to its logical and persuasive possibilities. In addition, this course will encourage writers to synthesize universal standards of “good” writing with a clear sense of personal voice. This course will above all emphasize the development of the skills of critical thinking in order to better respond to cultural standards and articulate individual ideas. TextbookIt is rather difficult to get all of our listed readings in a single collection. The course Blackboard will have all of the necessary selections in pdf format under Course Documents. Nearly all of the selections are freely accessible online. You are welcome to buy the books which contain the selections if you like to. You should have a folder of the text(s) with you when we discuss them in class. You will need a Handbook for writing papers. Here is what you will need:Aaron, Jane E. The Little, Brown Essential Handbook. 6th ed. Pearson, 2009. Fakundiny, Lydia. The Art of the Essay. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1991. ISBN: 0-395-54441-6.(Recommended)Opening Comments Nearly all of the six and a half billion humans on our planet are users of nonfiction prose. It is the largest use sector of language, capacious enough for any subject matter from the utilitarian to the philosophical. Language employed in a manual, a travelogue, a meditation, an editorial, an essay on art, a creed, a manifesto, a court judgment, a constitution, and whatever else, is enough to show us how varied, yet integral, an act nonfiction writing is to our daily lives. Most of our readings in this course are essays or parts of larger narratives breakable into essay units. Because of its easy adaptability, the essay is the friendliest of writing genres. It enforces no rigor in its format. You can write an essay in a paragraph, a pamphlet size, or in tens of pages. Book size writings have been known as essays as are mere one-pagers at the end of Time or Newsweek. Generally modest in time demand, the essay is very close to other forms discourse such as speech, letter, meditation, commentary and the like. Thus, it has always been around, although historically traced only to the Renaissance era. We can write only to the extent we read. Powerful writers are passionate readers. I hope that the authors in our visit list live up to their claims when you converse with them. Course Assumptions:You love “thinking upward” and “writing upward” because that’s where you are heading. Quality-oriented reading takes you there. You already have a reasonably good knowledge of basic research methods, but will enhance them for higher goals.Your personal contributions and leadership to class discussions is a strong fraternal expectation. In this class, YOU WILL TALK.You are determined to profit from the literacy experience of this course every day.Course Goals:To acquaint you with classic prose models of the great books tradition, distinguished for their content and styleTo help you use your own writing voice effectively in various invention contexts, applying the principles of composition learned from the analysis of the great modelsTo address diverse audiences confidently with interdisciplinary subject matterTo achieve higher delivery ability through credible academic research, writing, editing and refined critical judgmentAssignmentsThree essays: the first two will be shorter than the third, with at least 1200 words in the body, demonstrating strong text engagement and the necessary research to support your topic. The third paper will be longer, 8-10 pages in body, the formal process of which must originate with an annotated bibliography of choice scholarship. All three papers should show good judgment in the topic choice, research, thesis formation, peer review, revising, and editing. A good essay presupposes multiple revisions. Here are four sample topics for your essays. Any of these can be on the short or longer paper. You must confirm topics with me before you start the writing process. A personal essay as a reaction to a creed, a declaration, a position statement, a manifesto or any historically significant document. More than one item, especially where comparison is possible, is more desirable. While the tone and the voice may be personal, you still need to research for helpful support matter.A discovery from a certain author or two, of the distinguishing strengths in them or their works. You may show your reader what qualified your chosen author(s) to have gained classical recognition. Is it the particular period of history that helped the author(s) with that subject matter? Or, is it the power of style? Personal strengths? Or, was it the promotional help by someone else?An apology aimed at persuading your audience to include certain authors or their works as knowledge sources in the intellectual, ethical, and civic formation of a later generation’s thinking. A significant theme with interdisciplinary bearing from the course readings, researched, as shown by an annotated bibliography, 8-10 pages.Summaries and Reflections on selected readingsWorksheets on selected readingsOral presentations, including a ten-minute interpretive text analysis A take home or an assigned topical presentation as final examClass PoliciesRegular attendance is required. A missed class brings double labor on you, which by all means, you must avoid. According to Judson University policy, absences beyond the hours equivalent to the credits of the course must be reported to the Registrar and to the Vice President of Student Development. The policy also asks that students let the instructor know of illness or hospitalization so that the concerned offices may be advised of the circumstances of your unavoidable absence. All assignments are processed via Blackboard. Assignments are due on the post date, generally on class days, before the classmeeting. If the due date falls on a non-class day, the submission can be at any time during that day. Every item submitted must be in WORD format only, please. Many delays have been caused by non-standard format choices in the past.No late work will be accepted. I normally return assignments within a week. If longer time is required, I will announce it in class and explain why it might take longer. Remember, I have other classes like yours.When you get your papers back, please be sure to look for my markings and final comments at the end of the paper. Your returns contain more than the score.I am always reachable by email, in person or by phone. Any questions on class business should come to me. Let there be no reason for you to be “confused” or to be misled by “rumors.” We do not operate by rumors. We will attempt to complete the portion as laid out, but please understand that extra time may occasionally be necessary for certain selections. In such cases a slight overlap into the following week could occur, which should not be perceived as flawed organization.I will supply a small number of worksheets for text study and submission. The worksheets will drive our class discussions, for which I will designate individuals as moderators. Each unit’s completed worksheet is due on the day the unit is closed. If it happens to fall on another day, you will know that it is because of the overlap mentioned above. This should not be thought of as a reason for “confusion.”For the units that do not have worksheets, you must do a one-page text summary of the reading for each author. On another page you must also write a critical reflection on the reading, addressing the author’s thought and style. So, you must produce two one-page submission items per author in this group, one of summary, and the other of reflection.
